India test-fires land-attack version of BrahMos missile

India conducted a series of tests of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile to extend its range today. It test-fired the land-attack version of the BrahMos cruise missile near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean.

The Ministry of Defence tweeted: "Congratulations @DRDO_India for the successful launch of Brahmos missile & for hitting the target in the Bay of Bengal with pin point accuracy."

Currently, India is working on a 1,500-km range version of the system that can be launched from land, water or air. BrahMos, the only supersonic cruise missile in the world that flies at three times the speed of sound at 2.8 Mach, has a range of 290 km, but efforts are on to extend this to 400 km and beyond.

According to news agency ANI, the test was conducted by the Indian Army from one of the islands in the strategically located Andaman and Nicobar region in the Indian Ocean.

Over the last few months, India has rapidly tested a number of indigenous weapon technologies, including various missiles. With tensions on the rise against China after the latter transgressed into Indian territory at multiple points in Ladakh, India has reportedly deployed a number of indigenous missiles on the China border.
