India lofts 5-point agenda targeting climate change at COP26

India has lofted a 5-point agenda to target Climate Change, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 at the COP26 environment summit in Glasgow.

India has once again exhorted the developed world to share $1trillion with the developing nations for climate action.

Also, Modi made five commitments from India towards climate action:

India will increase its renewable energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030

It will fulfil 50% of its energy requirement through renewable energy by 2030

India will cut down its net projected carbon emission by 1 billion tonnes by 2030

By 2030 India will bring down carbon intensity of its economy by more than 45 per cent

The country will achieve the target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2070

India Narrative looks at Modi's climate and international agenda on day two of the COP26 summit.

Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Gaitri Issar Kumar told media persons that Modi would launch two important initiatives under the Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and the International Solar Alliance on Tuesday.

Today, India will enhance its International Solar Alliance (ISA) partnership by launching the Green Grids Initiative with the UK. If the ISA was jointly launched with France, the Global Green Grids Initiative–One Sun One World One Grid (GGI-OSOWOG) will foster interconnected solar energy infrastructure globally, bringing New Delhi and London closer.

Similarly, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure is an international coalition that aims to promote disaster-resilient infrastructure by ensuring that the developing countries have access to both technologies as well as finance. Such an initiative will help smaller nations combat the crisis induced by a warming climate.

India has also lined up the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) to battle climate change where it is collaborating with Sweden.

At Glasgow, the Prime Minister will also seek to build bilateral relations with other nations. Some of the important meetings with the heads of States include Switzerland, Finland, Nepal, Israel, Malawi, Ukraine, Japan and Argentina.

The UN Climate Change Conference 2021 being organised at Scotland is in partnership with Italy. Being attended by nearly 120 heads of States, the summit provides an opportunity to not only give a boost to climate action but also build mutual partnerships and invigorate relations after nearly two years of a coronavirus-afflicted dent in social, financial and economic relations.
