India amongst top few nations to meet Paris pact targets on emissions

<p style="font-weight: 400;">Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Friday said India is one of the few nations which are Paris Agreement compliant even as the country’s historical as well as present contribution to green house gas emissions is very low.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“As per the Paris Agreement, India had committed to reduce emission intensity of GDP by 33 to 35 per cent by 2030, of which it has already achieved 21 per cent and remaining will be achieved in the next 10 years,”” the minister said.</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">Briefing journalists in New Delhi on the eve of completion of 5 years of the Paris Agreement, Javadekar said, climate change is not a result of recent actions but of historical actions. Historically the USA has contributed 25 per cent of all emissions, Europe 22 per cent, China is responsible for 13 per cent while India accounts for only 3 per cent.
He pointed outs that according to the Climate Transparency Report 2020, India is the only G20 country to meet its commitments. India’s nationally determined contribution (NDC) will lead to a less than 2 degrees rise in temperature, he added.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The minister said, India in no way is responsible for this climate change, but as a responsible participant in world affairs India chose to take part in combating climate change. Mr Javadekar said, with only 2.4 per cent of the world's land area and 17 per cent population, India has preserved 8 per cent of world's biodiversity and 24.56 per cent of forest cover.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Javadekar said a recent report by the United Nations Environment Plan (UNEP) also says that India's emissions grew 1.4 percent in 2019, much lower than average of 3.3 percent per year over the last decade.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">He also disclosed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the global climate summit tomorrow on the fifth anniversary of the landmark Paris Climate Agreement.</p>

India’s solar tariff is already the lowest in the world which is also one of the main reasons why rural India is switching towards cheap green energy. India has made solar panels and battery storage cheaper, reaching nearly 100 million rural homes. Many major private players like Tata Power with Rockefeller, HCL Foundation, etc aims to connect with villages connecting about ten million households.

<p style="font-weight: 400;">India has installed 89 GW of renewable power capacity and will achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 175 GW target as planned. Prime Minister further raised the stakes: At the September 2019 United Nations Climate Action Summit, he announced a new target of 450 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Going forward India will launch the National Hydrogen Energy Mission, elevating India’s renewable energy bid to an altogether new level, Modi said last month at the third renewable energy, investors meet. Under the program, the government will drive grid-scale storage solutions, and provide feedstock for ammonia production.</p>
