Remembered for his daredevilry, the nation is paying tribute to Major Mohit Sharma on what would have been his 45th birthday on Friday.
On March 21 in 2009, Major Sharma of 1 PARA (Special Forces) while leading an assault team in the Kupawara district of Jammu and Kashmir observed suspicious movement in the Haphruda forest.
As he alerted his team, terrorists started firing indiscriminately. In the heavy exchange of fire, four of the commandos were critically injured. With complete disregard for his safety, he pulled two of his teammates.
Later, he threw grenades and killed two terrorists. However, in the ensuing firefight, he got shot in the chest. Realising further danger to his comrades, he charged and killed two more terrorists.
This was a daring act of valour wherein he rescued two more of his teammates and killed four terrorists.
However, during the fierce encounter, Major Sharma made the supreme sacrifice and was posthumously awarded Ashoka Chakra.
