In J&K, all above 45 are vaccinated in 3 districts

With the delivery of some fresh consignments in the last three weeks, vaccination against the coronavirus is gaining pace in all the twenty districts of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir where three districts—Jammu, Shopian and Ganderbal—have achieved 100% target in the 45-plus age group on Friday, 28 May.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was informed at a series of the high-level meetings in Jammu on Saturday that the vaccination was going on satisfactorily in the two age groups of 45-60 and 60-plus in 17 districts, even as it has been fully completed in the 45-plus age group in the Jammu district in Jammu division and Shopian and Ganderbal in Kashmir division.

It was revealed to the LG that Samba in Jammu division had already achieved 98% target in the 45-plus age group and by the evening on Saturday it was likely to be the fourth district to achieve 100% vaccination target in the 45-plus category.

According to the highly placed official sources, the winter capital district of Jammu was leading in the total vaccinations. In Jammu 6,21,140 vaccination jabs had been executed by Friday evening. While the first dose has been given to 4,89,639 common people in addition to those of the special categories like frontline covid warriors and health workers, the second dose has been given to 1,31,501 persons.

Among the common beneficiaries in Jammu district, 1,68,426 belong to the 60-plus group, 2,21,540 to the 45-60 group and 99,509 to the 18-44 group.

In Kashmir, interestingly the militant-infested Shopian district in South Kashmir has become the first district to achieve 100% target in the 45-plus category. In all, 79,036 common beneficiaries have received the vaccines in Shopian. While dose-1 has been given to 68,462 persons, dose-2 has been given to 10,574. In Shopian, 23,699 beneficiaries belong to the 60-plus group, 40,344 to the 45-60 group and 4,412 to the younger group of 18-44.

In the Central Kashmir district of Ganderbal, as many as 91,126 vaccines have been given to the common people. While 77,276 persons have got the first dose, 13,850 have got even the second dose. In that district, 24,599 beneficiaries belong to the 60-plus group, 46,673 to the 45-60 group and 6,000 to the 18-44 group, according to the data updated on Co-win.

However, DC Ganderbal Kruttika Jyotsna said that she would have to check with Co-win as vaccination for 18-44 group had not started in Ganderbal and other districts so far.

In the 45-plus category, that includes 45-60 and 60-plus age groups, Ramban has inoculated 77.36% of the targeted population followed by Bandipora (76.40%), Kishtwar (74.83%), Kathua (72.31%), Budgam (70.10%), Poonch (69.14%), Udhampur (68.98%), Baramulla (68.70%), Kulgam (65.82%), Reasi (64.32%), Rajouri (62.88%) and Doda (62.38%).

The Kashmir division districts of Kupwara (33.27%), Srinagar (42.73%), Anantnag (56.92%) and Pulwama (58.88%) have not fared well in the 45-plus category for a host of reasons, including shortage of vaccines, inclement weather, rumours of infertility and blood-clotting in social media, lockdown and non-availability of sufficient staff at some centres.
