AIIMS top docs go on Ladakh mission to treat patients in remote areas

With the objective of extending services of health experts and doctors to people in remote areas, camps are being organised across the country. One such was the three-day free medical camp in the remote high-altitude Zanskar region of Ladakh from July 24 to 27.

What made this camp novel was the fact that this was the first ever camp organised by the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) of Delhi in this remote area. The camp was the brainchild of Asoka Mission who arranged it at the Community Health centre in Padum of Zanskar.

During the three days patients numbering more than 1,500 were checked up and included in them were 450 by orthopaedics and 120 by gynaecologists. Patients were also attended and screened by experts and specialists from the departments of oncology, neurosurgery, paediatrics and general medicine at the open patient department of the camp.

According to the data of the patients checked, nearly 70 of them were identified with serious or advanced illnesses related to suspected cancer, apart from others who would require knee replacement and neurological treatment. The Asoka Mission will ensure further treatment of these serious cases by facilitating their therapy at AIIMS Delhi.

The AIIMS doctors during the camp found that the cases of gastritis, stomach ulcer and potential stomach cancer were quite high in the Zanskar region while the prevalence of diabetes was minimal.

The super specialist and specialist doctors from the AIIMS arrived at civil helipad Padum on the morning of July 24 in two sorties of Pawan Hans MI-17 helicopter.

The prior announcement of the camp saw more than 1000 patients registering their name for consultation with the AIIMS doctors of AllMS.

The team consisted of both super specialists and specialists of medical oncology, surgical oncology, gastroenterological, cancer oncology, anaesthesiology and palliative medicine, neurosurgery, gynaecologist and general medicine. This team was joined by two more specialist doctors of endocrinology and orthopaedics.

The Zanskar SDM expressed his gratitude to the doctors and also Tashi Motup Kau, the general secretary of Ashoka Mission, New Delhi, for conducting the camp. What makes camp important is that it gives a chance to the poor sections of the region to avail of the health services that they are unable to otherwise. Moreover, they have to travel to Kargil or Leh to avail of these facilities.

The people of Zanskar usually go to Leh for medical treatment, which is not easy considering the long distance and difficult terrain.
