Two dead as heavy rain batters Chennai

Heavy rain battered Chennai on Tuesday night, with two deaths being reported due to the downpour as a man was electrocuted and a woman was killed after a wall collapsed.

The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday morning declared a rain holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts.

Chennai received up to 126.1 mm rain from 8.30 am yesterday till 5.30 am today.

Two subways were closed in the city due to heavy flooding which led to massive traffic jams as the movement of vehicles slowed to a crawl.

Although the rain eased on Wednesday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rain at isolated places over Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts.
