A second year B. Tech student was found dead in his hostel room at IIT-Madras today. The police suspect that he committed suicide.
If the police investigation confirms the case, this will be the fourth case of a student committing suicide in IIT-Madras this year.
The second-year student from Maharashtra was pursuing Chemical Engineering, the police said.
Earlier this month, a 32-year-old PhD student of IIT-Madras died by suicide in his room. He was from West Bengal.
On March 14, a 20-year-old B.Tech student at IIT-Madras died by suicide in his hostel room on the campus. The deceased was identified as V Vaipu Pushpak Sree Sai from Andhra Pradesh. He was a third year student, pursuing B.Tech Electrical Engineering.
In February, a MS Research Scholar from Maharashtra, Stephen Sunny had also committed suicide in his room
Last week some students of IIT-M staged a protest on the campus demanding the management constitute a committee headed by a a judge to probe into the suicidal deaths reported inside the campus, following the death of a Ph.D candidate by suicide.
IIT-M claimed on Thursday that it had started a wellness session series for its students on Thursday to provide every student with an environment filled with prosperity and peace, according to the management.
