Tamil Nadu, West Bengal & Karnataka top India’s list of accident prone spots on highways

Tamil Nadu has as many as 748 accident-prone black spots on its highways making it the highest number in the country followed by West Bengal with 701 and Karnataka with 551 such black spots. Telangana figures at the 4th position with 485 black spots while Uttar Pradesh is 5th with 405. </p>

According to information tabled in Parliament by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the total number of black spots identified on National Highways in the country based on the data during the period from year 2016 to 2018 is 5803.</p>
<p>
The black spots are defined as accident prone stretches where more than five accidents or more than 10 deaths due to road mishaps take place every year.</p>

Uttar Pradesh accounted for the highest number of deaths in road accidents with 1,814 people losing their lives during 2018.Tamil Nadu was second as it recorded 1,796 people deaths in such mishaps, followed by West Bengal with 1,052 and  Karnataka 5th with 1,005 deaths. Rajasthan was ranked 4th with 804 people killed in road accidents followed by Telangana with 784 deaths. The total number of deaths in the entire country due to road accidents was 1,2047 during 2018.</p>
<p>
The Ministry said it has formulated a multi-pronged strategy to address the issue of road safety based on education, engineering (both of roads and vehicles), enforcement and emergency care.</p>
<p>
It said some of these black spots had design problems with the roads which were being rectified on high priority.</p>
