Sourav Ganguly undergoes angioplasty after heart ailment

BCCI president and former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly had to undergo an angioplasty on Saturday after being diagnosed with a heart ailment which flared up while he was using the treadmill in his home gym.

Ganguly complained of a chest pain after a gym session on Friday and was taken to hospital after the problem recurred on Saturday.

An angioplasty is a surgical procedure to open the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle.

"Sourav Ganguly has undergone angioplasty. He is stable now. He will be monitored for 24 hours. He is completely conscious. There are two blockages in his heart for which he will be treated," Dr Aftab Khan, of Woodlands Hospital, Kolkata told media.

“He was not feeling well last night. However, he decided to continue his morning routine on Saturday and suddenly felt dizzy,” a hospital source said.

In a statement, Dr Rupali Basu, MD and CEO of Woodlands, said Ganguly has a family history of heart disease and was being treated with dual anti-platelets and statin after being brought in around 1 pm.

“His pulse was 70/min, BP 130/80 mm of Hg and other clinical parameters were within normal limits. His ECG showed hyperacute ST-segment elevation in inferior leads and lateral leads. Echo showed mild inferior wall hypokinesia with preserved overall left ventricular function. He is stable hemodynamically,” the statement said.

The hospital formed a board of specialised doctors for Ganguly’s treatment. “He has some blockage and we will do angiography. He may go through angioplasty. He is stable now,” said Cardiac Specialist Saroj Mondol soon after Ganguly was admitted.

Messages poured in on social media from political leaders as well as the cricketing community wishing Ganguly, fondly known as “dada,” a speedy recovery.

“Sad to hear that @SGanguly99 suffered a mild cardiac arrest and has been admitted to hospital,” Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of the West Bengal, said on Twitter.

“I wish and pray for the speedy recovery of @SGanguly99. I’ve spoken to his family. Dada is stable and is responding well to the treatment,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said on Twitter.

The former left-handed batsman, who retired from international cricket in 2008, played 113 Tests and 311 one-dayers. One of the most successful skippers for India in the longer format, Ganguly led India to 21 Test wins..
