Separatist Amritpal Singh on the run, massive manhunt launched to nab “Waris Punjab de” head

Chandigarh: Setting to rest all reports about the arrest of ‘Waris Punjab De’ president Amritpal Singh, a press note issued by the Public Relations Department states that the Khalistani separatist is ‘on the run’ while 78 of his followers have been arrested in Punjab. According to initial media reports, Amritpal was arrested after a hot chase of over 2 hours.

On Saturday, according to the press release the police launched a massive state-wide Cordon and   Search Operations (CASO) in the state against elements of Waris Punjab De (WPD). Several  criminal cases stand registered against the group. A total of 78 persons have been arrested so far, while several others have been detained for questioning.

Divulging details, the press release said that several activists of WPD were intercepted by the Police at the Shahkot-Malsian Road in Jalandhar district and seven persons were arrested on the spot. Some others including Amritpal Singh are on the run and a massive manhunt has been launched to nab them, the handout said. Sources said that Amritpal may be hiding in the Jallandhar area. Singh’s flight to evade arrest is being widely viewed as a cowardly act in the social media.

The police have recovered nine weapons, including one .315-bore rifle, seven 12-bore rifles, one revolver and 373 live cartridges of different calibres.

WPD elements are involved in four criminal cases relating to spreading disharmony among different classes of society, an attempt to murder, an attack on police persons and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duties by public servants. An FIR No. 39 dated February 24, 2023, stands registered against WPD elements for the attack on Ajnala Police Station, says the release.

The statement said that all persons involved in criminal offences shall be dealt with in accordance with the law and all persons wanted by the police should surrender to the process of law. Their constitutional rights of legal defence shall be protected.

Meanwhile, all the citizens are requested not to pay heed to fake news and rumours. The situation in the state is stable. All persons indulging in mischievous activities for disturbing peace and harmony shall be dealt with strictly.
