Schools shut, flights disrupted as heavy rains lash Chennai, adjoining districts

Heavy rains lashed Chennai and the adjoining coastal areas on Sunday night and Monday morning as a result of which the Tamil Nadu government has decided to shut schools.

Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, and Chengalpattu woke up to heavy rains accompanied with thunderstorms on Monday.

More than six Chennai-bound international flights were diverted to Bengaluru as they could not land due to the heavy rain. The departure of a dozen international flights was also delayed because of the inclement weather.

Chennai’s Meenambakkam received as much as 13.7 cm of rainfall till 5.30 am on Monday which led to heavy waterlogging in the city.

IMD expects light to moderate rain to continue till June 21 in Chennai and several other districts in Tamil Nadu.
