Punjab police team takes separatist leader Amritpal and 3 of his men to Dibrugarh jail in Assam

Chandigarh: Punjab police have arrested ‘Waris Punjab De’ president Amritpal Singh and taken him along with three of his companions to lodge them in the Dibrugarh jail of Assam, highly placed sources disclosed.

A team led by the Superintendent of Police, Tejbir Singh left for Dibrugarh by air from Delhi airport last night. All of them travelled to the national capital by road. Sources close to a member of the police team said that the detention of all four under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) would be announced shortly.

Swapan Sharma, DIG Jalandhar (rural) who steered the operation said that while speeding away yesterday Amritpal’s SUV hit 4 motorists who have been admitted to a hospital. Four armed men were travelling in the SUV. The vehicle has been taken into custody. An ISUZU jeep was recovered today from Salem village under Mehatpur police station. A .38 bore revolver and 57 live cartridges and two fake number plates were found in the black ISUZU, he added.

Sources disclosed that Amritpal was being funded by organisations based abroad through hawala channels. He is also suspected to be linked to the ISI of Pakistan. The NIA is likely to question Amritpal and his men in Dibrugarh.

Those arrested for the February 23 attack on Ajnala police station are Ajay Pal Singh, Gurvir Singh, Baljinder Singh, Harvinder Singh, Gurlal Singh, Savreet Singh and Amandeep Singh

Meanwhile, SSP Amritsar (rural) Satinder Singh continues to say that Amritpal is still absconding and the police have surrounded a village where is suspected to be hiding.

Several illegal guns and ammunition have been recovered including six 12-bore guns with 193 live cartridges. A 315-bore gun with 139 cartridges in excess of permissible has been recovered from Harvinder Singh.

The media managers who framed the publicity strategy of the police are now being questioned for their attempts to misrepresent facts putting the Punjab government in an inexplicable situation.

Internet services remain unavailable in the state till noon tomorrow.
