PM Modi says India poised to surpass Paris pact targets for cutting emissions

Reiterating India’s Climate goal 2030, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday night said, “India is not only on track to achieve its Paris Agreement targets, but to exceed them beyond expectations.’’

” We have reduced our emission intensity by 21 percent over 2005 levels. Our solar capacity has grown from 2.63 gigawatts in 2014 to 36 gigawatts in 2020. Our renewable energy capacity is the fourth largest in the world. It will reach 175 gigawatts before 2022. And, we have an even more ambitious target now – 450 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030. We have also succeeded in expanding our forest cover and safeguarding our biodiversity,” the Prime Minister said at the online summit to mark the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement.

As many as 77 world leaders addressed the summit — hosted jointly by the UK COP26 Presidency along with the United Nations (UN) and France, in partnership with Italy and Chile, to mark the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement.

India has pledged to increase the share of power-generation capacity that doesn’t use fossil fuels to 40 percent by 2030; today, generation capacity from renewable, hydroelectric, and nuclear sources already reaches 38 percent, putting India on track to comfortably exceed its target. The other commitment is to reduce carbon emissions by 33 to 35 percent (from 2005 levels) by 2030. India looks likely to reduce emissions by as much as 45 percent by 2030, far surpassing its Paris target.
