Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered all the Indians who lost their lives in the partition of the country, as the nation observes ‘Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas’ today. PM Modi paid tributes to them and recalled the struggles of those who were uprooted from their homes.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said: “Partition Remembrance Day is an occasion to reverently remember those Indians whose lives were sacrificed in the partition of the country. This day also reminds us of the suffering and struggle of those who were forced to bear the brunt of displacement. I bow down to all such people.”
PM Modi had first announced August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in 2021. Since then it is observed as an annual national memorial day to commemorate the victims and sufferings of people during the 1947 partition of India.
Several families were displaced and lakhs of people lost their lives in the partition.It aims to remind Indians the need to remove social divisions, disharmony and to further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment.
The partition displaced between 10 and 20 million people along religious lines, creating overwhelming refugee crises. There was large-scale violence, with estimates of the loss of life during the partition varying between several hundred thousand and two million.
