Pakistan has violated the ceasefire agreement signed with India on February 25 this year with its security forces resorting to unprovoked firing along the International Border in the Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday,

The Inspector General of Border Security Force (BSF) Jammu frontier, N S Jamwal, told PTI :“Pakistan Rangers opened fire on an Indian patrol party near the fence in Ramgarh sector of Jammu’s Samba district at 6.15 am on Monday while some maintenance work was going on.

The cross-border firing comes after a two-month lull of the director generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both sides committing to abide by the peace agreement that was first signed in November 2003. This was for the first time in about five to six years that the guns had fallen silent for over 60 days.

According to the Indian army, the Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire at least a dozen times daily on an average between February 2020 and February 2021 when both sides agreed to strict observance of all agreements and understandings to observe a ceasefire along the LoC.

The year 2020 witnessed 4,645 violations by Pakistan on the LoC, with August and September – the first anniversary of the Centre revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019 – accounting for the highest number of violations for any two consecutive months in 17 years. This figure for last year stood at more than 5,100 if the violations along the international border are also counted. These ceasefire violations by the Pakistan army on the LoC were to help terrorists sneak into Jammu and Kashmir and destabilise the region.
