Pakistan Taliban calls off ceasefire with Imran Khan govt, declares itself branch of Afghan Taliban

The banned militant organisation Tehreek-e-Pakistan (TTP) unilaterally declared the end of the month-long ceasefire with the Imran Khan government on Thursday.

Accusing the government of violations of the agreement, the group said in a statement their top leaders were not released as promised and had not formed negotiating teams to conduct talks. It also said the Pakistani army security had carried out raids while the ceasefire was in force.

The month-long ceasefire came into effect on November 9 after the secret deal between the TTP and Imran Khan government brokered by the Afghan Taliban.

"Now let the Pakistani people decide whether it is the TTP or the Pakistani army and establishment that is not abiding by the agreements?" the group said in a statement.

“In these circumstances, it is not possible to advance the ceasefire," said Mohammad Khurasani, the spokesperson of the TTP.

The TTP has also been using the period of ceasefire for regrouping and trying to project itself as a saviour of Pashtun nationalism. The chief of the TTP Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud has been touring the region and meeting tribal leaders while declaring that the TTP is a branch of Afghanistan Taliban in Pakistan.

“TTP is a branch of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, it is part of the same umbrella,” he told the tribal leaders that very soon the same kind of the Islamic rule will be there in the region.

The secret deal between the TTP and the Imran Khan government was brokered by the Interior Minister of Afghanistan and chief of the dreaded terror outfit Sirajuddin Haqqani. Questions were raised by the Pakistani Supreme Court and the civil society whether Prime Minister Imran Khan had the right to make a “secret” deal with the UN designated terror group responsible for the deaths of Pakistan Army soldiers and the students of Army Public School Peshawar, without taking Pakistani parliament and people into confidence.
