Indore has been adjudged India’s cleanest city for the sixth consecutive year with Surat in the second spot while Navi Mumbai toppled Vijaywada from the third position in the Central government’s annual cleanliness survey, announced on Saturday.
Noida in the NCR has dropped two ranks and figures at the 11th spot this year in the Swachh Survekshan list. But it is cleaner than neighbouring Gurugram which was ranked at the 29th place in the overall ranking for all cities with a 1 lakh plus population.
Among the cities having a population below one lakh, Maharashtra’s Panchgani was ranked number one, followed by Patan in Chhattisgarh and Karhad in Maharashtra.
Haridwar was adjudged the cleanest Ganga town in the category of more than 1 lakh population, followed by Varanasi and Rishikesh.
In the category of best performing states in ‘Swachh Survekshan Awards 2022’, Madhya Pradesh has secured the first position, followed by Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.
Among the states having fewer than 100 urban local bodies, Tripura has bagged the top rank, according to the survey results.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards to the winners at an event in Delhi on Saturday also attended by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
The 7th edition of Swachh Survekshan was conducted to study the progress of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) and rank the Urban Local Bodies based on various cleanliness and sanitation parameters such as certification for garbage -free city and open-defecation-free city, service-level progress and citizen’s voice.
The annual cleanliness survey has grown from an assessment of 73 cities in 2016 to 4,354 this year.
