Nation pays homage to India’s freedom fighters on Shaheed Diwas, Martyrs’ Day

India and its leaders paid homage to Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar—three heroes of the nation's freedom struggle on their death anniversary, also called the Shaheed Diwas or the Martyrs' Day.</p>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted in Hindi. He said: "Salutations to the revolutionaries of Indian Independence. The sacrifice of the great sons of Maa Bharati will remain an inspiration for generations of Indian. Jai Hind."</p>

On March 23, 1931 the three freedom fighters, all in their early twenties, were hanged in the Lahore jail for killing British police office JP Saunders. They wanted to avenge the death of another eminent leader of India's freedom struggle Lala Lajpat Rai, who died after being struck with lathis leading a rally against the British rule.</p>

Some of the other prominent personalities who tweeted on the Shaheed Diwas were Union Minister for Child Development Smriti Irani and, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. </p>
