Mumbai Metro’s Line 12 project poised to speed up as 47 hectares of land allotted for new depot

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has obtained 47 hectares of land for the construction of a depot, casting yard and receiving substation for the proposed Metro Line 12 that will run from Kalyan to Taloja.

Thane Collector Ashok Shingare has issued a notice for the allotment of land at Nilje Pada in Kalyan taluka for the construction of a depot, labour camp, casting yard and receiving substation required to run trains on Line 12.

According to an MMRDA official, 47 hectares of land has been allotted by the collector at zero cost as part of a vital public project. Now a tender will be floated for the construction of a depot.

The 20-km-long fully elevated Mumbai Metro Line 12 and will have 17 stations. The total cost of the project is Rs 5, 494 crore which is being funded by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). The project is expected to be completed by October 2025.

The new rail corridor will play a crucial role in reducing Mumbai’s chronic traffic congestion problem by providing a quick, affordable and environment-friendly means of transport. The line will seamlessly integrate with the Wadala-Ghatkopar-Kasarvadavali-Gaimukh lines 4 and 4A.
