Mumbai breaks rain record for July, schools and colleges shut after IMD red alert

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in Mumbai after the weather office issued a “red alert” warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the metropolis.

Mumbai has registered its highest ever rainfall of 1,512.7 mm so far in July this year as the city was lashed by heavy rain on Wednesday. The total rainfall in the city for the month has broken the earlier all-time high of 1,502.6 mm recorded in July 2020.

Due to incessant rains, out of the seven reservoirs that supply water to Mumbai, the Vihar, Tansa and Tulsi lakes have overflown so far, according to BMC. Vihar lake, located in Mumbai’s Sanjay Gandhi National Park, has started overflowing which poses a danger to Aarey Colony in the vicinity. The authorities have warned people not to go near the lake.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a red alert for Telangana has issued a “red alert” in 10 districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy showers very likely to occur in Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad,

The weather department has issued an “orange alert” for heavy rainfall in nine districts of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla, Solan and Mandi.

Meanwhile, Delhi has recorded its second wettest July in the last 15 years after Wednesday’s rain. The national capital’s base station at Safdarjung has recorded 369.2 mm of rain so far this month. This is second only to 507.1 mm rain recorded in July 2009.
