Motorcyclist says Mumbai traffic cop took bribe via GooglPay, probe ordered

In a major embarrassment for the Mumbai police, a motorcyclist has  complained on Twitter that a traffic cop in uniform took a bribe from him and the money was paid into an account online through GooglePay.

The complainant, Jason Coehlo, also posted a screenshot of the money transfer to the account on social media.

However, police officials claim that the account into which the money was sent did not belong to a policeman.

Coelho said that he was stopped by a traffic policeman for riding on the wrong side of the road under Aarey bridge on Western Express Highway on Tuesday.

He asked the policeman to issue a challan for the violation which he would pay later in the day but the policeman refused to do so. He then told Coelho to clear his two pending challans.

Coelho said that the total due was around Rs 1,500, but the cop threatened to slap a penalty of Rs 2,000, unless he paid a bribe. The policeman allegedly presented a QR code to pay a bribe of Rs 500 through GooglePay.
