Lalu Yadav gets 5-year jail term in another fodder scam case

Former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav was today sentenced to five years in jail and fined Rs 60 lakh by a CBI court in a fifth case linked to the fodder scam.

The case involves the illegal withdrawal of Rs 139.5 crore from the Doranda treasury, as part of the fodder scam that took place in the 1990s, when Lalu Yadav was Chief Minister of Bihar.

The three-time Chief Minister was found guilty in the case along with 37 others last week and the sentence was pronounced today.

The Rs 950 crore fodder scandal involved large-scale corruption in which government funds allocated for animal fodder were embezzled by issuing fake bills.

The 73-year-old leader has been in jail since December 2017 and has served most of his sentence at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Jharkhand. He was brought to Delhi in January last year after his health worsened.
