Kartarpur Sahib Corridor to reopen two days before Gurpurab

Sikh pilgrims from India would now be again able to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan after Narendra Modi government today announced resumption of operations of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor from Wednesday.

The government's decision, which came just before Gurpurab on November 19, was made keeping in view the improved Covid-19 situation in the country. The operations at the Corridor had been suspended since March 16 last year on account of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The move will benefit a large number of Sikh pilgrims who use the Kartarpur corridor from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district to the international border for visiting the holy shrine on the banks of the Ravi river in Pakistan.

Pilgrimage through the corridor would be facilitated as per existing procedures and adherence to Covid protocols, the government announced on Tuesday after Home Minister Amit Shah held review meetings with officials to expedite resumption of corridor operations.

"In a major decision that will benefit large numbers of Sikh pilgrims, the Modi government has decided to reopen the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor from tomorrow, November 17. This decision reflects the immense reverence of Modi govt towards Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and our Sikh community," Shah tweeted today.

India had signed an agreement with Pakistan on October 24, 2019 on the modalities for operationalization of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor at Zero Point, International Boundary, Dera Baba Nanak.

Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, had assembled the community at Kartarpur and lived there for 18 years till 1539. The Gurudwara Darbar Sahib is built where Guru Nanak Dev took his last breath.
