Incessant rain disrupts life in Chennai, Tamil Nadu coastal districts

Incessant rain led to water logging in several parts of Chennai on Thursday disrupting normal life. The flow of traffic in the city was blocked due to subways getting flooded.</p>
<p>
The weather department has said the downpour, which had intensified on Wednesday night, would continue for two days as a depression has formed over the Bay of Bengal which is likely to cross the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast by the evening of November 11.</p>
<p>
Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi said, "We're expecting more than 250 mm of rain in and around Chennai over the next two days.</p>
<p>
Heavy showers have been relentlessly battering the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai and nearby Chengelpet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Villupuram.</p>
<p>
In light of the weather forecast, a red alert has been issued for 20 districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, on November 11.</p>
<p>
The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority has released a flood advisory for the districts of Thoothukudi, Villipuram, Tirunelveli, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Chengalpettu in light of the heavy rains predicted for November 11.</p>
<p>
The state government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges on November 11 in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai districts.</p>
<p>
On Wednesday evening, the Indian Meteorological Department announced that the well-marked low pressure area over central parts of south Bay of Bengal had moved west-northwestwards and concentrated into a depression.</p>
<p>
The weather system is likely to cross north Tamil Nadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Karaikal and Sriharikota, close to the north of Puducherry, by the evening of November 11, the meteorological department said.</p>
