Illegal Call Centre that cheated US citizens of thousands of dollars busted in Gurugram

The local police has busted an illegal call centre in Gurugram that was cheating US citizens of thousands of dollars by planting malware in their laptops and then offering technical help to remove it for a high fee.

The fake call centre was operating from a residential building in Gurugram Sector 43 and 10 people including the owners and managers have been arrested by the police.

The suspects used to send pop-ups of porn sites on various websites to trap their victims in the USA. Once the unsuspecting victims clicked on the pop-up the malware would freeze their computer screens.

“The suspects would then dupe US citizens through voicemail messages in the name of technical support and removal of virus from their laptops and desktop computers. They would take remote access to their computers through UltraViewer, and charge between $100 and $3,000 from each victim to get the computer system repaired. They would charge through gift cards and Google pay, among other payment methods,” KK Rao, commissioner of police.

The culprits would convince their victims that if the computers systems were not rectified immediately, their personal and financial data would be compromised, the officials said.

He said that a police team is questioning the arrested employees to trace the owner and his business partners.
