Gurgaon, Noida schools shut as heavy rain batters Delhi NCR

Schools have been shut in Gurgaon and Noida as heavy rain lashed Delhi NCR on Friday. Big corporates have asked their staff to work from home as flooding on several roads led to traffic jams.

All government and private schools till class 8 across Noida and Greater Noida will remain closed today due to rains, an official order announced on Thursday. The order was issued following an alert by the weather department warning of heavy rain.

Delhi received 31.2 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm as the light to moderate rain drenched Delhi for the second consecutive day on Thursday, leading to flooded roads in several areas and affecting traffic movement on key roads across the city.

The weather department has predicted more rains for the national capital on Friday. “Light intensity rain would occur over and adjoining areas of many places of South-Delhi, South-East Delhi, NCR ( Hindon AF Station, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadri, Greater Noida, Gurugram during next 2 hours,” the weather department tweeted at around 8 am.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘yellow alert’, cautioning people about moderate rain at most places in the city.

Heavy rainfall led to waterlogging in parts of Gurgaon, leading to traffic jams as police struggled to decongest roads.

“Due to continuous heavy rainfall in Gurugram, there is waterlogging at some places and the traffic is moving at a slow speed. Therefore, we request all of you that you should come out of the house only when necessary,” read the traffic police advisory issued on its Twitter handle.

According to the district administration, Gurugram on Thursday received 54 mm of rainfall.
