Group Captain Varun Singh, who was being treated for severe injuries sustained in the helicopter crash in which General Bipin Rawat and 12 others were killed, passed away today.
Group Captain Singh, a Shaurya Chakra winner, was the sole survivor in the crash near Wellington in Tamil Nadu and had been flown to Bengaluru for treatment.
The Indian Air Force said he died of his injuries this morning.
"The IAF is deeply saddened to inform the passing away of braveheart Group Captain Varun Singh, who succumbed this morning to the injuries sustained in the helicopter accident on 08 Dec 21. IAF offers sincere condolences and stands firmly with the bereaved family," the Indian Air Force said in a statement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in mourning his death.
