Govt launches Bharat 6G Alliance for big leap in telecom sector

Union Communications and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday launched the Bharat 6G Alliance, a new initiative for introducing the next-generation telecom technology in India after the successful roll-out of 5G.

The latest 6G technology is likely to provide speed nearly 100 times faster than 5G and enable the development of new communication applications.

Bharat 6G Alliance is an alliance of public sector, private sector and other departments and will work for the development of new telecom technology and 6G in the country. Bharat 6G Alliance will guide various aspects of emerging telecom technologies and platforms over the next decade and enable India to be a leading contributor to 6G technology and manufacturing by 2030.

“India has acquired over 200 patents for 6G technology. The forthcoming 6G technology will leverage the foundation laid by 5G and offer enhanced capabilities such as improved reliability, ultra-low latency, and affordable solutions,” the minister said at the launch event.

The Bharat 6G Alliance will deliberate on various aspects of emerging telecom technologies and platforms in the next decade. In March this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the 6G vision document that details India’s plans to develop and launch 6G telecom services in a few years.

In addition, with a grant of Rs 240.51 crores under the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF), two agreements were signed for projects,

• 6G THz Testbed with Orbital Angular Momentum(OAM) & Multiplexing through consortium of SAMEER, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Patna
• Advance Optical Communication Test Bed with Consortium Members as IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi, Signalchip Innovations, Signaltron Systems Pvt Ltd, Sasmos het Technologies Ltd, SFO Technologies Pvt. Ltd, ERNET India, Quanfluence Private Ltd, Sterlite Technologies Limited, Nav tech, Tejas network.
• A grant of  Rs. 48 crore for 66 Startups and MSMEs was also announced

By accelerating standards-related patent creation within the country and actively contributing to international standardization organizations such as 3GPP and ITU, B6GA seeks to position India at the forefront of 6G innovation.

One of the key goals of B6GA is to facilitate market access for Indian telecom technology products and services, enabling the country to emerge as a global leader in 6G technology.
