Gadkari wants fixed driving hours for truck drivers to curb accidents

In a bid to reduce fatigue-induced road accidents, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has emphasised on deciding driving hours for truck drivers of commercial vehicles, somewhat similar to the guidelines for airline pilots.

Gadkari has directed officers to work on a policy to include 'on-board sleep detection sensors' in commercial vehicles, at par with the European standards.

The minister, in a National Road Safety Council (NRSC) meeting held today, also directed the council to meet every two months and share their updates.

Meeting of the new NRSC, which was formed on July 28, was attended by all the 13 Non-Official Co-Opted Individual Members. General V K Singh, the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, was also present along with the senior officials of the ministry at the meeting where suggestions were made to improve road safety.

Gadkari advised all the members to work in diversified areas of road safety so that more lives can be saved on the road. He also directed the ministry officials to work in close coordination with the NRSC and implement their suggestions on priority.
