Farmers suspend year-long protest as govt settles pending demands

The protesting farmers on Thursday suspended their year-long protest after the Centre sent them an official letter accepting their remaining demands which were pending after the three farm laws were repealed.

These include the withdrawal of all agitation-related cases and compensation to the families of farmers who had died during the course of the movement against the contentious agriculture laws.

The government has also agreed to their demand that there will be no criminal liability of farmers in cases involving burning stubble of their crops.

The government will also discuss the electricity amendment bill with the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) before introducing the issue in Parliament.

The government has also agreed to constitute a committee on MSP (minimum support price) of crops other than wheat and rice and the SKM farmers’ union has been asked to submit a list of members who will represent them in the committee.

They have already been assured that ongoing MSP in the country and procurement operations will continue in its present form.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had repealed the three contentious farm laws on the auspicious occasion of Gurupurab last month. However, the farmers had continued with their protest of blocking highways leading to Delhi as they wanted a written assurance that their remaining demands would also be met.
