Delhi to open vaccination for 18-44 group in government schools

The Delhi government plans to inoculate people in government schools instead of hospitals in the third vaccination drive that seeks to give jabs to people over 18 years. The state government plans to ready nearly 100 schools for the drive.

The Delhi government is doing vaccinations in schools with a view to curbing the transmission of the disease as even with large numbers of people, the risk of infection spread will be less in schools. The identified schools will coordinate with the nearest government hospitals for the drive. The government also plans to increase the number of schools from 100 to 274.

Delhi has begun vaccinating people over the age of 18 but will begin its large-scale drive only from May 03. The Delhi government said that vaccination for people over the age of 45 will continue to happen at the hospitals as before.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said: "We have already received 4.5 lakh doses from the manufacturers and now we are distributing them in all districts. From May 3, we will start the vaccination drive on a large scale in Delhi".

India has launched its third phase of coronavirus vaccinations from May 01 under a liberalised plan to vaccinate people between the 18-44 age group. The government has asked people in the 18-44 age group to register themselves on the CoWIN website for the jabs.

The country had kick-started the first phase on January 16 for the frontline health workers, followed by the second phase launched on March 01 for people over the age of 45 years.
