Delhi records highest rain in 46 years, airport waterlogged

<p>
<strong>With a heavy downpour on Saturday morning Delhi has recorded a total of 1,100 mm of rainfall this monsoon season which is the highest in the last 46 years.</strong></p>
<p>
The 2021 monsoon has brought the highest rainfall to Delhi since 1975 when a total of 1,150 mm was recorded.</p>
<p>
With showers continuing to lash the national capital and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting more rain in the week ahead there is a possibility that this record will also be broken.</p>
<p>
According to the Safdarjung observatory, Delhi recorded 94.7 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am on Friday and 8.30 am on Saturday. Rain was continuing to  lash the national capital till noon when this report was filed.</p>

Parts of the capital’s Indira Gandhi Airport (IGI) airport have been waterlogged following the record rain.</p>
<p>
Visuals shared by news agency ANI showed aircraft on the ground at the airport which is partially flooded. The bad weather has affected flight operations at the airport</p>

Both IndiGo, SpiceJet confirmed on Twitter that all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected as a result of the rainfall.</p>

The India Meteorological Department or IMD has predicted thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy intensity rain in Delhi and its adjoining areas.</p>
<p>
IMD has issued an orange alert for the national capital which is a warning for extremely bad weather with the potential of disruption in commute with road and drain closures and the possibility of power outages.</p>
<p>
The IMD has warned of traffic disruption due to waterlogging of roads and urged citizens to follow traffic advisories and avoid going to areas such as underpasses that frequently get flooded during heavy rain.</p>
