Delhi-Meerut Rapid Transit system crosses another milestone as track -laying begins

The work on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System corridor is going at a brisk pace as track-laying has begun in the underground tunnels. This work has started in the Delhi section with tracks being laid on both the up and down platforms of the Anand Vihar station.

At present, the track slabs are being placed and soon the tracks will be laid with the work proceeding to New Ashok Nagar. The parallel tunnels from Anand Vihar towards New Ashok Nagar have already been constructed.

As per the Press statement issued by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation, 2 kilometres of track has been laid on the elevated section between New Ashok Nagar station and the underground tunnel ramp of Khichripur while of the total 5 km of track on the elevated section between Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar, track on 2 km has been completed.

The construction of the viaduct from New Ashok Nagar to the Khichripur ramp is over and the ramp construction – connecting the underground tunnel and the elevated part — is in final stages.

Incidentally, this is the first time in India, an advanced technology is being used to produce high strength ballastless track slabs. What makes these slabs special is that they have a longer life span and require less maintenance, thereby reducing the overall maintenance cost of the tracks.

With a view to minimize the vibration in the tunnels caused by the movement of the high-speed trains, a mass-spring system is being used by NCRTC. In this process before laying the slab tracks in the tunnels, a layer of first-level concrete is applied on the surface of the tunnel and following that a mass-spring sheet is laid on this layer, and then the track is laid on top of it.

Meanwhile, construction work of the Sarai Kale Khan, New Ashok Nagar, and Anand Vihar RAPIDX stations has now reached the next phase.

The Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor is 82 km long and will connect Meerut to Delhi in less than an hour. The trains on this route will run at a maximum speed of 180 kmph.
