Prompt response and medical assistance is vital in case of emergency rescue operations including accidents and disasters. To achieve this end, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police has launched a special vehicle – which is claimed to be the first in the country – to rescue people and carry out rescue operations in cases of accidents.
This vehicle which has been christened as VEERA or Vehicle for Extrication in Emergency Rescue and Accidents, was flagged-off by M.K. Stalin, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. The event was held at the State’s police headquarters in Chennai.
Following the launch, the CM, other dignitaries and guests saw first-hand rescue personnel performing a demonstration of the vehicle’s operation. Introduced as part of the special road safety measures adopted by the Government, this vehicle has all the modern equipment which have been designed with the singular purpose of rescuing accident victims trapped in mangled and crashed vehicles. The crew manning this vehicle have undergone special training for this purpose.
The VEERA project is part of the corporate social responsibility initiative in collaboration with Hyundai Glovis and Isuzu Motors Pvt Ltd and the Tamil Nadu Highways Department and Indian Institute of Technology Madras have provided their expertise on it.
