Centre calls high-level meet as Covid cases surge, 14 deaths in last 24 hours

India’s daily count of fresh Covid cases shot up to 6,050 in the last 24 hours, which is 13 per cent higher than 5,335 cases reported yesterday, according to data compiled by the Union Health Ministry.

The single-day count for new cases has crossed the 6,000 mark for the first time since September 16 last year.

With the deadly coronavirus surging again, Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya has called a review meeting with the health ministers of all states and Union Territories today afternoon to review the preparedness in the country.

As many as 14 deaths were recorded in the country in the last 24 hours. While three deaths were reported from Maharashtra, two each were reported from Karnataka and Rajasthan, one each from Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, and one death was reconciled by Kerala, according to Union health ministry data updated on Friday.

The daily positivity rate, an indicator of the spread of the infection, currently stands at 3.39 per cent and the country’s active caseload has gone up to 25,587.
