The last CCTV footage of 23-year-old Nikki Yadav just hours before she was murdered has surfaced on social media. The victim, who was strangled to death by her live-in partner with the cable of a mobile phone charger, can be seen going up a fleet of stairs to her flat in Delhi’s Dwarka on the afternoon of February 9.
Her live-in partner Sahil Gehlot had dumped her body in a deep-freezer in his family restaurant in the national capital. He was arrested on Tuesday in the murder case.
The police tracked down Sahil after a neighbour reported Nikki missing. Her parents live in Jhajjar, a town in Haryana.
Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Singh Yadav said on February 10, someone called to say a man had killed his girlfriend and had married another woman on the same day.
Police said Sahil confessed to the murder under sustained interrogation and revealed where he had hidden Nikki’s body.
The couple fought inside a car for around three hours near the house over Sahil marrying another woman. Nikki did not know that her live-in partner was engaged to another woman. She found out a day before his wedding, police sources said. She had threatened to file a case if he married someone else.
Sahil’s new bride has reportedly gone back to her parents’ home.
Nikki and Sahil met while preparing for medical entrance exams and were in a live-in relationship for years, according to the police.
Sahil, 24, was arrested after he led the police to the body.
“We are looking into the CCTV footage and also scanning for more to collect evidence and establish what happened,” a police officer said.
The murder, which surfaced on Valentine’s Day, has horrifying similarities to the ghastly murder of Shraddha Walkar by her boyfriend Aaftab Poonawalla, who cut the body into several pieces and stored them in his fridge from where he disposed of them bit by bit over several days.
