The Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of Delhi Police has arrested a Chennai resident for allegedly buying stolen vehicles in Delhi-NCR and selling them in other metros of the country, officials said on Wednesday.
According to DCP Central Sanjay Kumar Sain, the accused identified as Habeeb, has been striking deals with auto-lifters operating in Delhi-NCR. He used to sell the stolen vehicles to buyers in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.
The police have recovered five luxury cars from his possession that were reported stolen at different places in Delhi.
The accused disclosed that he used to travel by air to Delhi for striking deals in cars. He used to buy stolen cars from one Danish in Delhi/NCR and then transport these cars through private transport carriers to delivery points in Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata, the police said.
The Delhi police team got information that the man had come to Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and would be meeting someone at a restaurant near a toll plaza. The AATS rushed to Gwalior and arrested Habeeb. A duplicate key of a stolen Hyundai Creta was also recovered from him.
