Brave rescue by Indian Coast Guard saves 7 fishermen from burning ship

Playing their role as India’s maritime security force, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) swung into action to save the lives of seven fishermen as their ship had caught fire.

It was during its routine patrolling close to the notional International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) when ICG ship Arush became aware of a ship which had caught fire. Reaching the area, they rescued seven fishermen from burning boat Kalash Raj on November 7. The rescue operation was undertaken in coordination with other fishing boats in the area.

The fishing boat had reportedly caught fire due to fuel leakage from engine exhaust. It was then ICG ship Arush which was under the command of Commandant (JG) Ashwini Kumar, reached the spot at the earliest and got into action by quickly engaging in firefighting operations.

The boat however, could not be saved and salvaged because of the rapid spread of fire. The vessel finally sank.

Having safely rescued the crew who were completely exhausted and visibly tired, ICG took them onboard and provided them with first aid and initial assistance on their ship.

Since Arush was engaged in forward area patrol, the ICG handed over the rescued fishermen to another fishing boat operating in the vicinity for passage to Okha.

It was stated by ICG that the rescued fishermen are expected to reach Okha today.
