The bodies of 11-year-old Shruthi and her younger sister Jnanashree (6), were removed after a long rescue operation. The landslide was triggered by heavy rains on Monday night.
According to a PTI report, Shruthi who was reading a book in the portico of the house, heard a loud sound and ran inside the house thinking that the sound must have come from there. Jnanashree also ran inside the house. At the same time, the hill collapsed on the house. The mother of siblings, who was busy in the kitchen, rushed outside, thinking that the children would also be there.
As a tree fell on the way and water was overflowing, rescue personnel could not reach the spot immediately. The rain also hampered the operation, according to the local police.
Four members of a family were also killed in a similar incident after a portion of a hill collapsed on their house at Muttalli village in Uttara Kannada district, police sources said.
Meanwhile, an orange alert against heavy rains has been issued in seven districts in southern Karnataka namely Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Hassan, Shivamogga, Chikmagalur, Uttara Kannada and Udupi.
