BJP leads in Tripura, Nagaland, likely to join ruling coalition in Meghalaya

As state election results for the three northeastern states of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya pour in, the BJP looks to be taking a comfortable lead in Nagaland and Tripura. Though the final results will be out only in the evening, these state election results will be crucial for the BJP as it looks to reset economic activities in these states.

As per latest figures, BJP is in lead in 27 seats in the 60 seat contest in Tripura. The CPM and Congress are leading in 14 and 6 seats respectively. In Nagaland, where the BJP has an alliance with NDPP are in the lead position as well. The NDPP is leading in 27 seats while BJP in 12. The Congress as per latest reports, is yet to open its account.

In Meghalaya, there is a tight fight with Conrad Sangma led National People’s Party (NPP) in lead position with 26 seats. The BJP, which was formerly in alliance with NPP, is in lead in 12 seats.

The Northeast is the crucial link for India as it connects not just the neighbouring countries including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan, Nepal and China but also serves as the gateway to Southeast Asia.

“The northeast for years did not receive the kind of attention it deserves. However, the situation is changing now with the Act East policy,” Ashish Nath Professor, Department of Economics, Tripura University said, adding that several infrastructure projects are already underway in the northeastern states.
