Union Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the nation’s first post office constructed using 3D concrete printing technology on Friday at Bengaluru’s Cambridge Layout near Ulsoor Bazaar.
Welcoming the development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Every Indian would be proud to see India’s first 3D printed Post Office at Cambridge Layout, Bengaluru. A testament to our nation’s innovation and progress, it also embodies the spirit of a self-reliant India. Compliments to those who have worked hard in ensuring the Post Office’s completion.”
L&T Construction designed and finished the 1,100 square feet Bengaluru Post Office using this innovative technology within a mere 45 days. The new technology also reduces the cost of construction by around 30%.
Speaking about the unique building, Vaishnaw said this new construction technology was carried out through 3D-concrete printing technology, which is a fully-automated building construction technology wherein a robotic printer deposits the concrete layer-by-layer as per the approved design and special grade concrete.
3D printing technology is emerging as a new method for constructing buildings with the use of computer-aided design to build three-dimensional objects using a layer-by-layer approach.
“The spirit of development, the spirit of developing our own technology, the spirit of doing something which was considered impossible in the earlier times, that’s the defining feature of these times,” the minister added.
According to an L&T statement issued earlier, the structural design of the post office was validated by IIT Madras. It said that 3D concrete printing, an emerging technology, has the potential to transform construction practices by quickening the construction process and enhancing overall build quality.
