A third-year B Tech student of IIT Madras committed suicide on Tuesday making it the second suicide death in the institution this month, according to the local police.
The deceased was identified as Vaipu Pushpak Sree Sai native of Andhra Pradesh. He was found hanging in his Alakananda hostel room on the IIT-Madras campus.
According to the police officials, Pushpak did not show up for classes in the afternoon yesterday. His friends got worried and checked his room which was found locked from inside. The students managed to open the room and found him hanging.
“We are investigating this matter and further details are awaited,” a police official said.
Kotturpuram Police have registered a case and sent the body to Royapet Government Hospital for post-mortem.
Following the incident, IIT Madras said an internal inquiry committee is looking into the incident.
“A standing Institute Internal Inquiry Committee, including elected student representatives, which has been recently constituted will look into the incident,” IIT Madras said in a statement.
The institutions also said that the family of the deceased has been informed about the tragic incident.
