Amritsar’s heritage street rocked by midnight blast, cause being ascertained

Panic gripped Amritsar after a midnight ‘blast’ in the Heritage Street near Golden Temple left several tourists and devotees Injured. Police claims that injuries were due to shards of glass shattered by the blast. The blast was reported from near the parking of Saragarhi Sarai. Several tourists and devotees were strolling there. Due to the blast the window panes of a restaurant near the parking and the Saragarhi Sarai were shattered and fell on the heritage street which caused injuries to pedestrians. The blast led to panic owing to ongoing tension in Punjab over past incidents and it led rumour mills spinning.

Dr Mehtab Singh Additional Commissioner of Police said that the exact cause of the incident was yet to be ascertained. He said forensic teams were on the spot and holding investigations to find the reason behind the ’blast’. He said only window glass of the nearby buildings were shattered while no damage was caused to the buildings. The police said the situation was under control and there was no need to panic. The police officials appealed to the people to maintain peace. A police official said that the blast apparently occurred in a chimney of a restaurant in the heritage street. He said investigations were underway.

The Commissioner of Police took to Twitter saying “A news related to blasts in #Amritsar is going viral on social media, the situation is under control. Investigation is on to establish the facts of the incident and there is no need to panic. Urge citizens to maintain peace & harmony, advise all to fact check before sharing.”
