Amritpal Singh was arrested after he was cornered in a village Gurdwara—IG police

Punjab police arrested fugitive Khalistani activist Amritpal Singh from Rode village in Moga district of Punjab in wee hours today. Addressing the media Inspector General (headquarters) Sukhchain Singh Gill said that acting on inputs they traced Amritpal to a Gurdwara in the village and arrested him at 6:45 am.

“We had special inputs that he was hiding in Gurudwara there and we surrounded the entire village. We did not enter the Gurudwara to maintain its sanctity but cornered him which led to his arrest. He is now being taken to Dibrugarh, Assam and law will take its further course”, said the IG.

He further informed that it was a combined operation of Punjab police, its Intelligence wing, Amritsar and Moga police. Punjab police have been chasing him relentlessly for 35 days and he has been arrested under National Security Act (NSA). At this point we have nothing more to share and urge all to maintain peace and harmony and not spread any fake news or rumours.

IG Gill’s statement demolished the argument of Amritpal’s family that the separatist leader had surrendered from his native village of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale like a warrior and had even released a video of him doing a ‘Katha’ before his arrest. Jaswinder Singh Rode, former Jathedar of Akal Takht and nephew of slain separatist Bhindranwale also peddled the surrender theory, saying that Amritpal had surrendered after the two had a long meeting.

Sources claim having been fully cornered and with no escape after his wife’s failed attempt to flee to the UK.
