Video: 100 metres tall Supertech twin towers demolished in less than 9 seconds

The illegal 100 metres tall Supertech Twin Towers in Noida were demolished on Sunday afternoon in a controlled implosion.  Experts used 3,700 kg of explosives to bring the over 30-storey residential  towers crashing down inwards  in less than 9 seconds .

Around 7,000 residents in the nearby buildings were evacuated and measures taken to prevent collateral damage to them from the explosion. The closest building is merely 9 metres away from the twin towers which are taller than the Qutab Minar.

The twin towers were demolished after a legal battle over 10 years that went up to the Supreme Court. Residents of Supertech Emerald Court society first won the case in the High Court against the illegal construction of the two towers by Supertech after which the builder moved the Supreme Court.

Explosives were packed into 7,000 holes drilled in the key pillars of the two towers that will be brought down. The towers implode inwards and fell in a heap of derbis and dust in the area as part of the “waterfall technique” used to demolish them .

One of the towers, Apex, now has 32 floors and is 103 metres tall while the other Ceyane has 29 floors with a height of 97 metres.

As much as 55,000 tonnes of debris is reported to have piled up at the site of the implosion which is expected to take three months to clear.

Mumbai-based company Edifice Engineering along with a South African company Jet Demolition carried out the operation to demolish the towers.
