Tamil Nadu records highest number of fresh Omicron cases, India’s count goes up to 341

India recorded 84 fresh cases of Omicron on Thursday with Tamil Nadu accounting for the highest number at 33.

Maharashtra was next on the list with 23 cases of the highly mutated new variant of coronavirus followed by Karnataka with 12. Delhi and Gujarat recorded seven cases while two new cases also surfaced in in Odisha.

The tally for the Omicron infections in the country has now gone up to 341.

Meanwhile, Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting to review the status of Omicron and the preparedness of health systems across the country.

PM Modi said, "In view of the new variant, we should be 'satark and savdhaan.' We should ensure that the health systems in the states, beginning from the district level, are strengthened. The government is alert and continues to take proactive action and support states in their efforts of containment and management under the ‘Whole of Government’ approach."

"The focus should be on ramping up testing, accelerating vaccination and strengthening health infrastructure. The centre should send teams to states with low vaccinations, rising cases, insufficient health infrastructure to assist them," PM Modi added.
