Sri Lanka Army doctors break Indian record of largest kidney stone

The record for the removal of the largest kidney stone in the world was with Indian doctors and it has now been broken by a group of Army doctors from the neighbouring country Sri Lanka.

These Army doctors removed a stone early this month at the Colombo Army Hospital which is 13.372 centimetres long and weighs 801 grams, as per a statement issued by the Army on Tuesday.

The surgery team was led by Consultant Urologist Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) K. Sutharshan, who is the Head of Genitourinary Unit at the hospital, along with Captain (Dr) W.P.S.C Pathirathna and Dr Thamasha Premathilaka.

They were assisted by Colonel (Dr) U.A.L.D Perera and Colonel (Dr) C.S Abeysinghe as Consultant Anaesthetists, the Sri Lanka Army statement said.

The Indian doctors who held the previous record had removed a stone in 2004 which according to the existing Guinness World Records, was around 13 centimetres. Meanwhile the other neighbour of India which is facing severe political and economic turmoil, Pakistan had reported the heaviest kidney stone, weighing 620 grams, in 2008.

Confirming the Sri Lankan Army record, the Guinness World Record said: “The largest kidney stone is 13.372 cm (5.264 in), and was removed from Canistus Coonghe (Sri Lanka) in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on June 1, 2023.”

It also mentioned that the earlier record of 13 cm had not been surpassed since 2004.
