<p>
Mumbai recorded a 34% jump in Covid cases on Tuesday with 10,860 fresh cases during the day.</p>
<p>
The number of new Covid cases in Maharashtra went up by 51% to 18,466 from 12,160 on Monday. The state recorded 20 Covid deaths in the last 24 hours.</p>
<p>
Of the total fresh cases in Mumbai, 834 patients needed hospitalisation while 52 patients needed medical oxygen as well, according to the official daily bulletin.</p>
<p>
Presently, the city has over 47,000 active cases of which 4,491 patients are hospitalised.</p>
<p>
Omicron, the new highly transmissible Covid variant, is triggering the current surge in cases in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. The national capital is being put under a week-end curfew to contain the spread of what is being seen as a third wave.</p>
<p>
Maharashtra has so far reported 653 patients infected with Omicron, and most of them have been from Mumbai (408), followed by Pune (71).&nbsp;</p>
<p>
Across the city, 16 containment zones have been identified and 369 buildings are currently sealed.</p>
