Maharashtra cop’s organ donation saves five lives including that of Indian Army Officer

True to his uniform and oath, a police naik from Pimpri Chinchwad, a city close to Mumbai in Maharashtra, even after his death, has saved lives of five persons. The cop’s heart was transplanted to a 46-year-old Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army on August 14.

It was on August 3, the constable met with a road accident and fortunately a police van passing by immediately rushed him to YCM hospital. The cop was later moved to the Ruby Hall Clinic where doctors treated him for severe traumatic brain injury.

Sharing details about the case with the media, Dr. Prasad Muglikar, Medical Director of Ruby Hall Clinic said that the patient had grievous injuries and was declared brain dead. “As part of the organ donation awareness programme, family members were counselled to donate his organs,” he added.

Behram Khodaiji, CEO of RHC added that their counsellors managed to convince the patient’s relatives and that the constable’s wife was extremely brave and large-hearted to agree to donate her husband’s organs.

The JCO who received the constable’s heart was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy and was on the waiting list for a donor’s heart. The heart transplant was performed at Army Institute of Cardio Thoracic Sciences and the JCO was reported to be stable. Incidentally, this was AICTS’ sixth heart transplant which was successfully performed on August 14. This news was tweeted by Indian Army Southern Command, HQ, Pune.

Talking about the other organs of the constable that were donated, Aarti Gokhale, Central Coordinator, Pune’s Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre said that the kidney and pancreas were sent to Jupiter Hospital while another kidney and liver donated to wait-listed patients at RHC.

The heart was sent to AICTS for transplant. A green corridor was provided by Pune traffic police and Southern Command Provost Unit.
